Where to eat on Gili Air
01/07/2018
For a small island, there seems to be endless restaurant options to choose from. While I wasn’t able to eat at all of them, after living on the island for 4 months, these are my recommendations of where to eat on Gili Air!
Warung Muslim – $
If you want good, cheap local food, this is where to get it. The cheapest option on the menu, you can get Nasi Campur for 20k! It looks a bit dodgy at first, but it’s one of the most popular among locals and visitors. They have a small table and chairs, but most people do take away.
If you come up the main road from the harbour, once you see a restaurant called Easy Gili, take a right. Warung Muslim is right next door.
Waroeng Alam Damai – $
This one has my favourite Mie Goreng, a popular fried noodle dish. They can make it as spicy as you like it (not spicy at all, or ‘local spicy), but what makes it special is that they add pineapple to it. I haven’t seen any other restaurants do that yet, and it’s a nice touch to the dish!
Warung Sunny – $
Another nice spot for local food where you can sit down and order from a menu. Mostly between 20-40k per dish. I would recommend the fruit juices, and the beef rendang burritos.
Lemongrass – $
Cheap local food, between 20-40k per dish. If you are not a fan of spicy food, this is a great place, as none of their food is spicy unless you request it. I would recommend the fried tempe starter.
Sate Bar – $$
We usually spent between 100-200k for two of us here. Nice Sate sticks with good sauces. Would highly recommends the potatoes… they are thinly sliced and fried, nice and crispy, and come with a yummy sauce. They have have grilled pineapple that comes with chocolate sauce, great for dessert. They also deliver anywhere on the island for free!
I am Bagus – $$
High recommendations for this place. They serve roasted chicken, and you can order a quarter, half or full chicken! Really nice and juicy, and good portion sizes. One of Ben’s biggest complaints in Indonesia is small portion sizes, and very little meat in the meat dishes. He was a happy camper when we found this place. Nice sauces to go with the chicken and fries. I was a big fan of the farmers salad, and the chocolate mousse for dessert. They also deliver for free! We usually spent between 100-200k here for two of us.
– I saw recently that they added more options to their menu. You can check out their menu on their facebook page.
Rubys Cafe – $$
One of the highest rated restaurants on TripAdvisor, and for good reason. Definitely one of our favourite restaurants. Nice atmosphere, this was our ‘date night’ restaurant, and still we would only spend between 100-200k here. I always ordered the Indian Butter Chicken, but the Beef Rendang is very popular as well. The potato croquettes are a great starter, and the jalapeno poppers here are worth a mention. During high season, they do get busy in the evenings and sometimes have a wait.
Mama’s Pizza – $$
One of the more expensive places for pizza on the islands, but one of the best! For anyone who has eaten at Regina’s Pizza on Gili T, this is a pretty close contender. Each pizza was around 80-100k each, our favourites were the Scapece and the Prosciutto & Funghi. It’s right on a the beach, so it is a decent place to come and watch the famous Gili sunsets.
Mowies – $$
A great place (and popular one) to watch the sunset! We typically spent between 100-200k for food here, and it’s a good place for drinks too. Eat on the beach and watch the sunset! I would recommend the pumpkin soup, and the jackfruit tacos.
Star Bar – $$
Our favourite place to drink on Gili Air. The guys who work here are the best. Genuine, friendly people, and that’s why we always came here. We also always met other cool travellers while sitting at ‘our spot’ at the corner of the bar. Awesome atmosphere here, and they have live music every couple of nights. It’s also a great place to stay if you are looking for accommodation. Foodwise I would recommend the nachos here. They are not your typically North American nachos, but they are tasty. If you come here, tell Alqi the bartender that Kayla & Ben say hi!!Â
Sharkbites – $$Â
Nice spot on the main road from the harbour. They mostly do burgers and sandwiches, but also do a nice mac & cheese. During the low season (November to April) they do rock & roll bingo, which is a lot of fun.
Chill Out Bar – $$
We had both local and western food here, and both were pretty good for the price. Right on the beach, it’s one of the best spots on the islands to go snorkelling from the shore.
Breadalicious – $$Â
While I wasn’t a big fan of the sandwiches from here, let me tell you about the cookies and the cheesecake. This is what you need to come here for! The cheesecake aint cheap at 50k per piece, but it is delicious. Cookies are 20k each, and I highly recommend trying the matcha cookie. Don’t let the green colour turn you off, it’s delicious and pairs nicely with a chocolate cookie. If you are staying on the island awhile, they offer a membership which you can sign up for free and get 20% off, and at lunchtime you can get a sandwich and a drink for 60k. They also serve coffee, and have some of the best Wi-Fi on the island if you are looking for somewhere to get connected.
So there you have it, my top recommendations on where to eat on Gili Air!
Let me know in the comments what you think, or if you have any restaurants you would recommend!
