Flying from Coron to El Nido

Taking domestic flights in the Philippines is quite different from other parts of Southeast Asia, and not in a good way. Here’s why:

 Fewer Airlines, Limited Routes

Unlike Thailand, Vietnam, or Indonesia, where budget airlines like AirAsia, VietJet, and Lion Air dominate, the Philippines has fewer airline choices:

  • Philippine Airlines (PAL) – the country’s flag carrier, generally reliable but expensive.
  • Cebu Pacific – the main budget airline, but often has delays and hidden fees.
  • AirAsia Philippines – a more affordable option, but fewer domestic routes.

Because there are only a few carriers, flights fill up fast, especially to tourist hotspots like Coron, Siargao, and El Nido.

Expensive Tickets (Especially Last-Minute)

  • Flights in the Philippines tend to be more expensive than in other parts of Southeast Asia, especially when booking late.
  • A one-hour flight between Manila and Cebu can cost $100+ USD last-minute, compared to $30-$50 for similar routes in Thailand or Vietnam.
  • Booking in advance is essential to get reasonable prices. Even budget airlines jack up their rates closer to departure.

Frequent Delays & Cancellations

  • Cebu Pacific and PAL are notorious for delays and schedule changes.
  • Weather-related cancellations (especially during typhoon season June–November) are common.
  • Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is one of the most congested airports in the world, leading to frequent flight disruptions.

Bottom Line:
Unlike other parts of Southeast Asia, where cheap flights are easy to find, travel in the Philippines requires more advance planning and a bigger budget for flights.

Trip Resources:

Here’s some resources I used to book and coordinate my itinerary through the Philippines along with some recommendations:

Hostels

If you’re a budget traveler or looking for an easy way to meet others,  Hostelworld is the best place to search.

Hotels

We pretty much exclusively used Booking.com to book all of our hotels in the Philippines. It has the most options and usually the best price.

On occasion we also used Agoda.com to book a few hotels, as they sometimes had different availability or better pricing.

Flights

International flights to The Philippines are typically cheapest into Manila and Cebu City. Both of these cities in my opinion should only be a stop over before flying domestically or taking a bus or ferry to another destination.

Personally, I like to use Google Flights to find options, then I always try to book my flights directly on the airlines website. This saves a lot of hassle should you need assistance with your flight later on.

BUSES/Ferries/& more

The easiest ways to search for ways to get around the Philippines are with 12GoAsia and Klook.

Both platforms show various options (ferries, buses, flights, etc.) so you can compare option and prices in English.

Check 12GoAsia out here and check out Klook here.

Insurance

Travel insurance is a must for every trip to ensure you’re covered in unexpected situations.

My recommendations are  WorldNomads or Safety Wing, which are made for backpackers and digital nomads.

Tours & Experiences

Tours can be booked online through GetYourGuide or Klook, or through your local accommodations or travel agencies.

Getting Around in Port Barton

Walking:

The great thing about Port Barton, is it’s small and simple—pretty much just two main streets running parallel to the beach, lined with a mix of cozy guesthouses, family-run restaurants, and a few laid-back bars.

The sandy roads give it this charming, unpolished vibe, and you won’t find big resorts or chain stores here—just local businesses with lots of character.

The beach is the heart of it all, just a short stroll from anywhere in town.

Port Barton Walking

Trikes

As with anywhere in the Philippines, you can easily hire a tricycle taxi to get around.

However, since Port Barton is much quieter and less populated than places like El Nido, you won’t always find drivers waiting around outside.

If you need a ride, you can ask your accommodation to call a driver for you—they’ll usually have a local contact who can come pick you up.

Rent a Bike

You’ll find a few local shops and accommodations offering bikes and motorbikes for rent. The roads in Port Barton are mostly unpaved and sandy, so keep that in mind when choosing between a bike and a motorbike.

Just be cautious while riding, especially during or after rain, as the roads can get muddy and slippery.

Remember to check the condition of the bike or motorbike before renting—especially brakes, tires, and lights—and always wear a helmet for safety.

Rent a Kayak

Kayaking is a great way to get to some of the nearby beaches, like Coconut Beach & White Beach.

Kayaks are available for rent from a variety of vendors along Itaytay beach. Just head down to the main beach in Port Barton and you’ll find options there.

Kayak to Coconut Beach

Hire a taxi boat

You can also hire a taxi boat to take you to the beaches!

To take a boat taxi simply walk onto the main beach (Itaytay Beach) and there will be captains waiting who you simply negotiate a price with and jump on the boat.

Be sure to ask about being picked up from where you’re dropped off!

Book a tour Guide

Book a tour or private guide to see all the sights Port Barton has to offer! You’ll find multiple options walking around town, but here are two I can personally recommend:

Island Hopping Tours:

We did our island hopping tour with Island Hopping with Joey and would highly recommend them! Joey and his family run this small tour company and we had an amazing day with them.

You can read my blog post all about Island Hopping in Port Barton here.

You can contact them on Facebook which also has a phone number and email listed or Instagram.

Land and Sea Tours:

For all things tourism in Port Barton, including island hopping, I can recommend St. Vincent Travel and Tours. They are also a small family run business in Port Barton, and they offer a variety of tours and services!

You can contact them via their Facebook page, which also has a phone number and email listed or via their Instagram.

The journey typically begins near the main road in Port Barton, close to the village center. Head in the direction of Pamuayan Beach, as the trail to the falls lies in the same general area.

If you’re unsure where to start, don’t hesitate to ask the locals—they’re always happy to point you in the right direction. The trail is mostly flat and easy-to-follow.

Learn to Spin Fire Staff or Poi

As soon as you arrive at the bus station in Port Barton, you’ll notice signs offering lessons in the captivating art of fire spinning.

We had the chance to practice with Aivan, the guy behind the lessons, and he’s a talented flow artist and an all-around great person who makes learning both fun and approachable.

Lessons are laid-back, focusing on mastering the basics and safety techniques before moving on to fire. Once you’re ready, you’ll light up and experience the thrill of spinning fire!

Whether you’re a beginner or a flow arts enthusiast, it’s a creative, adventurous way to connect with the town’s vibrant energy and fellow travelers.

You can also catch his fire performances at Happy Bar. Head there for happy hour and sunset, and then catch Aivan’s show once the sun goes down!

(I recommend volunteering when he asks the crowd!)

Star Apple Canteen

If you only go to one restaurant in Port Barton, go to Star Apple Canteen. It is a local barbecue place with freshly caught fish at a great price.

Ben still hasn’t stopped talking about the tuna we ate here!

The portions are generous, and the prices are budget-friendly, making it a great spot for backpackers and budget-conscious travelers. But even if you’re not on a budget, it’s worth having a meal here!

Milano Cafe + Sicily Cucina Italiana

If you’ve been craving a good coffee, Milano Café  is home to some of the best coffee we found anywhere in The Philippines!

Another authentic Italian restaurant in Port Barton, we ate at Sicily Cucina Italiana twice during our stay and both times were amazing! If you’re craving pasta, this will hit the spot.

Kusinero del Barrio

A great place to experience local cuisine, Kusinero del Barrio serves excellent and reasonably priced Filipino dishes.

The Chao Long (similar to Vietnamese pho) is particularly praised.

Port Barton Nightlife

Port Barton has a surprisingly fun nightlife for such a small town, but don’t expect the bustling party scenes of El Nido or Boracay.

CocoRico is the party hostel in town, and most nights out start there. They have the best happy hour in town, offering FREE drinks from 7:00pm and 7:30pm!

From there, head to the Reggae Bar (next to the bus station) and then to Moon Bar for the rest of the night.

Also check out Flow Pool Bar & Resto, they have a pool bar as well as regularly scheduled foam parties!

When is the best time to visit Port Barton?

Yesterday, so what are you waiting for?!

Seriously though, the best time to visit Port Barton is during the dry season, from November to May, when the weather is warm, sunny, and perfect for outdoor activities like island hopping, hiking, and beach lounging.

Peak Season (December to February):

  • Weather: Ideal with sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rain.

Shoulder Season (March to May):

  • Weather: Still dry but starting to get hotter, especially in April and May.
    • The heat can be intense, so plan for early morning or late afternoon activities.

Rainy Season (June to October):

  • Weather: Frequent rain showers, particularly in July and August, but there are still sunny breaks.
    • Boat tours may be canceled due to rough seas, and hiking trails can be muddy and slippery.

For the best experience, aim to visit between November and early May, especially if you want ideal weather and calm waters for island hopping and beach lounging.

Jelly Fish Season (April to June):

Jellyfish season in Port Barton typically occurs during the warmer months, from April to June, but it can vary slightly depending on the year. During this time, an increase in jellyfish sightings is more likely, particularly in shallow waters near the shore.

We were there in January, and saw some big jelly fish on Itaytay beach. Be sure to ask the locals the conditions while you are there!

Things to Know Before Visiting Port Barton

1. Limited Cell Reception and Wi-Fi

  • The Wi-Fi in Port Barton is notoriously poor, and cell reception is limited, making it a great opportunity to unplug and enjoy the simple beach town life. However, it’s not ideal for working remotely.
    • Download anything you might need—maps, movies, shows, or travel documents—before you get there.

2. Bring Cash

  • While there are now three ATMs in Port Barton (near the petrol station, the White House Inn, and the Dutch Kitchen restaurant), they are not always reliable.
    • Bring plenty of cash with you, as most places and activities require cash payments.

3. Accommodation Tips

  • Check for Air Conditioning: Many accommodations in Port Barton do not have air conditioning. If this is a must for you, confirm with your hotel or guesthouse before booking.
  • Water Pressure: Don’t expect strong water pressure for showers, especially in budget accommodations. In some cases, you may need to use buckets of water to shower. Be prepared to embrace the beach vibe and a little saltiness!

4. Environment Tax

  • Upon arrival in Port Barton, you’ll need to pay an Environment Tax. The cost is  50 PHP and is valid for 10 days.
    • Keep the receipt handy, as you’ll need to show it for any boat tours or day trips.

5. Transportation and Roads

  • The roads in and around Port Barton can be challenging for motorbiking, with rough and uneven terrain. Not great for beginner drivers.

6. Jellyfish Season

  • Jellyfish are more common during warmer months, particularly in April, which can make swimming or snorkeling annoying. It’s best to ask locals about conditions.

A Complete Guide to Island Hopping in Port Barton, Palawan

The island hopping tour in Port Barton was among our favorite tours we did in all of the Philippines!

While Port Barton doesn’t have the towering limestone cliffs that other hot spots of Palawan have to offer, the quality of the tour here surpassed any we did in El Nido or Coron.

Highlights of Island Hopping in Port Barton

Port Barton’s island hopping tours offer an unforgettable experience, taking you to stunning destinations filled with snorkeling, relaxation, and natural beauty.

Beach Port Barton

Starfish Island

They call it Starfish Island, but it is really just a sandbank in the middle of the bay. Starfish Island is known for its abundance of chocolate chip starfish!

Please note: Do not touch or disturb the starfish. You can damage or kill them.

Turtle Spot

Port Barton is famous for its sea turtles, and this snorkeling spot between German Island and Marindeg Island is where you’re most likely to find them.

We saw 2 sea turtles while we were snorkeling here!

Paradise Island

This island really was a paradise! We were the only boat here for the duration of our time, so we had the island all to ourselves.

The beach was beautiful and the water was perfect for swimming. We had lots of time here to enjoy the beach and relax.

This is where we enjoyed our buffet lunch! Joey and his crew cook it up on the back of the boat on the way to the island.

It was a mix of typical Filipino food. Rice, chicken adobo, pancit noodles, fresh seafood, fruits and veggies. It was delicious – one of the best meals we had throughout our time in the Philippines!

Exotic Island

Another beautiful island that we had pretty much all to ourselves. Our guide Joey told us he visits Paradise island first, whereas most other tours come here first, so we avoid the ‘crowds’, which in Port Barton is only a few other boats!

Here you can snorkel on the nearby reefs or just enjoy another amazing beach.

During long tide, you can walk through the shallow water to neighboring Albaguin Island!

Why Choose a Port Barton Island Hopping Tour?

The Island Hopping Tour in Port Barton was among the best tours we did in all of the Philippines!

If you’ve done any tours in El Nido or Coron, you’ll know how busy they are. Here in Port Barton, there are no crowds!

The busiest spot we visited was Starfish Island, where there was 3-4 boats. All of the other stops, we only had 1 or 2 other boats to compete with.  Joey and his crew made an effort to ensure we missed any ‘crowds’ by doing the itinerary in a different order, so most of the day we had spots mostly to ourselves!

Our tour crew were great and made sure everyone was enjoying themselves, compared to El Nido/Coron where we felt like we were just being shuffled from stop to stop.

Coconut Beach: Palawan’s Quirky Haven of Pigs and Palms

Coconut Beach showcases one of the most stunning coconut-lined shorelines in the Philippines!

With its rustic atmosphere and limited crowds, it stands out as one of the top attractions in Port Barton. Adding to its unique appeal, visitors can even encounter the friendly pigs that call this beach home!

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Coconut Beach in Port Barton, helping you plan an unforgettable visit to this idyllic palm-fringed paradise.

Coconut Beach Palawan Port Barton

Why you should visit Coconut Beach?

Stunning Natural Beauty: Coconut Beach is one of the most picturesque spots in Port Barton, boasting a pristine shoreline fringed with swaying coconut palms and crystal-clear waters. It’s a tropical paradise perfect for relaxing and soaking in the beauty of nature.

As the name suggests, Coconut Beach has one of the most stunning coconut-lined shorelines in Palawan.

Coconut Beach Port Barton Palawan

Swimming: The calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming, allowing visitors to enjoy refreshing dips in the sea.

There are some bamboo platforms you can swim out to and relax on. You may wish to bring some water shoes, as some parts of the beach can be rocky.

FYI: The main beach at Port Barton town had a lot of warning signs for jelly fish, and we even saw some big ones laying on the beach. Jelly fish in the Philippines can be an issue, particularly in March and April.

This area is safer for jelly fish, as it’s a shallow bay, though you should still be cautious. Ask the caretakers of the beach what the current jelly fish situation is like.

Coconut Beach Port Barton Palawan

Secluded and Peaceful Atmosphere: Unlike more crowded tourist destinations in Palawan, Coconut Beach offers a tranquil and uncrowded setting.

For the most part, Coconut Beach in Port Barton does not attract many tourists. The beach retains its rustic and unspoiled feel, making it ideal for travelers seeking an authentic and less-commercialized experience.

There is no infrastructure here, giving this Port Barton beach an authentic tropical island feel.

Coconut Beach Port Barton Palawan

Unique Experiences: Coconut Beach is home to friendly pigs that roam freely along the shore, adding a quirky and memorable touch to your visit.

If Pig Beach in the Caribbean is high up on your bucket list, then Coconut Beach could be considered the Filipino version!

As it is all over the Philippines, there is also a community of stray dogs living here. They were friendly for the most part, just looking for food or attention, but would leave you alone if you ignored them, opting for those visitors who give them what they want.

Accessible Yet Untouched: While it’s easily reachable by foot, kayak, or scooter, Coconut Beach remains largely undeveloped, preserving its natural charm and appeal.

Proximity to Other Attractions: Coconut Beach is just a short 15-minute walk from the neighboring White Beach, making it a convenient addition to your itinerary if you’re in the mood for some beach hopping.

    • Tip: Stay calm, avoid sudden movements, and give them space if needed.
  2. Private Property Signs:
    • Respect property boundaries and stick to marked trails to avoid trespassing.

Tips for Walking

  • Cost: Rates typically range from ₱400-₱600 per day, depending on the rental provider and the condition of the scooter.
  • Rental Requirements: You may need to provide a valid driver’s license and a deposit.

Tips for Driving to Coconut Beach

  1. Experience Level:
    • The roads can be tricky, so it’s best suited for those with some experience driving scooters.
  2. Check the Weather:
    • Avoid driving during heavy rain as the roads can become slippery and difficult to navigate.
  3. Safety Gear:
    • Always wear a helmet and closed-toe shoes for safety.
  4. Essentials:
    • Bring water, sunscreen, and a small bag with snacks.
    • Ensure your scooter is fueled up before heading out, as fuel stops are limited outside of town.
  5. Watch for Stray Animals:
    • Stray dogs and other animals may wander onto the road, so drive cautiously, especially in rural areas.

Taking a Trike to Coconut Beach: A Possible but Expensive Option

While taking a trike to Coconut Beach is possible, it’s probably the most expensive and inconvenient way to get there.

What to Expect

  1. Cost:
    • Trike fares to Coconut Beach are higher compared to other transportation options. While you can get a trike from Port Barton town for around ₱250-₱350 one way, arranging a return trip can cost over ₱500 PHP, as drivers may charge extra to come back to the beach for pickups.
  2. Availability:
    • While it’s relatively easy to find a trike in town to take you to Coconut Beach, return trips are less reliable. Few trikes come to the beach on their own for pickups. Once they are there, they know you are limited on options, and charge a higher return fare.
  3. Convenience:
    • If you decide to take a trike, you’ll need to organize the same trike to pick you up at a specific time. It’s crucial to agree on a total price for both the trip to and from the beach beforehand to avoid surprises.

The Trike Route

  1. Duration:
    • The ride takes approximately 30 minutes from Port Barton town.
  2. Road Conditions:
    • The dirt and unpaved roads leading to Coconut Beach can make for a bumpy ride.
  3. Drop-off Point:
    • Trike drivers will drop you near the beach entrance.

Tips if You Choose to Take a Trike

  1. Pre-Arrange Your Ride:
    • When hiring a trike in town, arrange for the driver to come back at a specified time to pick you up. Negotiate and agree on a total price for both trips beforehand.
  2. Carry Cash:
    • Make sure to have small bills for easier payment.
  3. Be Flexible:
    • Allow extra time in case of delays, especially if your trike doesn’t arrive on schedule for the return trip.

Where to watch the sunset in El Nido

Sunset in El Nido is nothing short of magical. With its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, and golden beaches, this tropical paradise offers the perfect backdrop for nature’s nightly show.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky comes alive with breathtaking hues of orange, pink, and purple, creating an unforgettable experience.

Sunset in El Nido

Whether you’re drawn to the energy of a lively beach, the tranquility of a secluded spot, or the charm of a beachfront bar, El Nido has plenty of options to soak in this daily spectacle.

In this guide, we’ll take you through the best places to experience the sunset in El Nido.

Top Spots to Catch a Stunning Sunset in El Nido

#1: Sunset at Las Cabanas Beach

Sunset in El Nido Las Cabanas Beach

Las Cabanas Beach is the #1 recommendation people will give on where to watch the sunset in El Nido, and for good reason.

Its west-facing location provides front-row views of the sun sinking into the horizon, casting vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple across the sky.

Sunset in El Nido Las Cabanas Beach

However, its popularity means it’s also one of the busiest beaches, especially during sunset, with a bustling atmosphere of visitors and beachgoers.

If you don’t mind the crowds, the energy and scenery make it an unforgettable experience.

How to get to Las Cabanas Beach From El Nido Town:

It’s about a 10-15 minute ride from El Nido town.

  1. Tricycle to and from Las Cabanas Beach:

    • Cost: Around ₱150–₱200 one way. Make sure to agree on the price with the driver before you hop in.
    • Availability: Tricycles are easy to find in El Nido town and in the parking lot for return trips.
  2. Self-Drive:

    • Rent a scooter or car in El Nido for more flexibility.
    • Ample parking is available at Las Cabanas Beach.

Once You Arrive:

The tricycle will drop you off on the main road at a shopping center (at the Mcdonalds) and from there, you’ll walk down a short trail (about 5–10 minutes) to reach the beach. The path is easy to navigate, you’ll pass by a bunch of shops and restaurants.

This is the same spot you can pick up a tricycle to get back to El Nido town. Please be patient as it will be very busy right after the sunsets.

The beaches popularity means it can get quite busy, especially during sunset hours, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to secure a good spot.

Entrance Fee:

There is no entrance fee for Las Cabanas Beach.

Restaurants With Sunset Views:

  • The Beach Shack
    • Known for its relaxed vibe, beachfront seating, and vibrant “Sunset Sessions” with live music and DJs. Perfect for cocktails and laid-back dining during sunset.
  • Maremegmeg Beach Club
    • A chic beachfront venue with cozy lounge chairs, excellent service, and an upscale menu. Offers stunning views of the sunset over the ocean.
  • J83 Beach Lounge

    • Renowned for its diverse menu, with a particular emphasis on tacos that fuse authentic Mexican flavors with Filipino influences.

#2: Sunset at Lio Beach

El Nido Sunset

Lio Beach is my favorite spot to watch the sunset in El Nido. At Lio Beach, you won’t see the sun dip directly into the horizon—it sets behind the dramatic limestone cliffs instead—but the view is still breathtaking.

Located near El Nido Airport, Lio Beach is known for its clean, well-maintained shoreline, swim-able water, and its blend of natural beauty and modern amenities makes it an excellent choice for a chilled-out evening.

Sunset in El Nido

The beach is lined with palm trees and features a long pier that stretches into the ocean, providing a great vantage point for capturing the sunset or simply enjoying the view.

Lio Beach is much less crowded than Las Cabanas, and gets even quieter in the evening, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, this is a great spot to catch the sunset in El Nido.

El Nido Sunset

The El Nido Airport (Lio Airport), is just a stone’s throw away from Lio Beach—literally a 2-minute walk!

The airport’s runway is situated near the beachfront, allowing visitors to watch planes approach and depart at close range.  You get an amazing view of planes taking off and landing while relaxing on the beach.

How to Get to Lio Beach from El Nido Town

It’s about a 15 minute drive from El Nido to Lio Beach.

  1. Free Shuttle to and from Lio Beach:
    • Operates hourly from El Nido town (pickup at the Ten Knots office on Calle Real Street).
    • Cost: Free.

  • Punta Playa

    • Offers a fusion of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine, specializing in seafood.
  • El Nido Grill @Lio
    • Specializes in Filipino cuisine with a focus on grilled dishes such as pork belly and squid.

#3: Sunset at Corong Corong Beach:

Sunset in El Nido Corong Corong Beach

Corong-Corong Beach is a good spot to catch a breathtaking sunset, with its west-facing view offering an uninterrupted display of vibrant colors over Bacuit Bay’s limestone cliffs and islands.

However, it’s not ideal for swimming due to its shallow waters, rocky areas, and patches of seaweed. It’s better suited for relaxing on the sand, enjoying the view, or grabbing a drink at one of the beachfront bars as the day comes to a close.

Sunset in El Nido Corong Corong Beach

Unlike the busier Las Cabanas Beach, Corong Corong offers a more laid-back vibe, making it a good spot to relax and soak in the breathtaking colors without the crowds.

How to Get to Corong Corong Beach from El Nido Town

It’s about a 12 minute drive from El Nido to Corong Corong Beach.

  1. Tricycle to and from Corong Corong Beach:

    • Cost: Around ₱100–₱150 one way. Make sure to agree on the price with the driver before you hop in.

  • Sip Sunset Lounge & Bar
    • With its bohemian beach bar ambiance, it offers a relaxed atmosphere complemented by live music and daily happy hour specials from 5 to 7 PM. Unwind on comfortable bean bags and swings under a large mango tree, enhancing the tropical experience.

#4: Sunset at Nacpan Beach (Twin Beach)

Sunset in El Nido Nacpan Beach

Nacpan Beach is one of the best spots to watch the sunset in El Nido because of its expansive west-facing shoreline, providing unobstructed views of the sun setting over the horizon.

Its serene atmosphere, with soft white sand, swaying palm trees, and calm turquoise waters, creates a tranquil setting to enjoy nature’s show.

Sunset in El Nido Nacpan Beach

Due to it’s distance from El Nido, the beach is less crowded than other popular sunset spots, allowing for a more relaxed and intimate experience.

How to Get to Nacpan Beach from El Nido Town

It’s about a 45 minute drive from El Nido to Nacpan Beach.

  1. Tricycle to and from Corong Corong Beach:

    • Cost: Around ₱800–₱1,000 round trip. Make sure to agree on the price with the driver before you hop in, and have them wait for you.

Plane Spotting at Lio Beach

The El Nido Airport (Lio Airport), is just a stone’s throw away from Lio Beach—literally a 2-minute walk!

I had no idea Lio Beach was right next to the airport when we got there, so I was super excited when I saw the first plane fly by!  You get an amazing view of planes taking off and landing while relaxing on the beach.

The airport’s runway is situated near the beachfront, allowing visitors to watch planes approach and depart at close range.

This setup is reminiscent of other famous plane spotting locations, such as Maho Beach in St. Maarten.

Plane spotting at lio beach

Aircraft Types:

Due to the airport’s shorter runway, it primarily accommodates smaller aircraft, including models like the ATR 72 and various private planes.

The main commercial airline operating here is AirSWIFT, which offers flights to and from several destinations in the Philippines.

El Nido Airport Flight Schedule:

If you are a nerd like me and you want to know exactly when the flight schedules, you can use www.flightradar24.com and search ENI as the Lio Aiport Code.

Click on arrivals or departures and you can see exactly when the planes will be coming and going!

Lio Beach

Sunset at Lio Beach

Everyone will tell you that Las Cabanas Beach is the best spot for sunsets, and they’re not wrong—it’s stunning. But Lio Beach gives it some serious competition!

At Lio Beach, you won’t see the sun dip directly into the horizon—it sets behind the dramatic limestone cliffs instead—but the view is still breathtaking.

El Nido Sunset

With its serene atmosphere and lack of crowds, Lio Beach offers a unique and unforgettable sunset experience that’s easily a close second to Las Cabanas.

If you hate crowds, I’d say Lio Beach takes the cake for sunset viewing.

Scuba Dive in Coron: A Wreck Diver’s Paradise

The waters of Coron Bay hold an incredible piece of history. Back in September 1944, a U.S. Navy airstrike hit a Japanese supply fleet anchored here, sinking several ships to the bottom of the bay.

Fast forward to today, and these WWII wrecks have become some of the most epic diving spots in the world. But they’re not just rusting relics—they’re now thriving ecosystems, buzzing with marine life.

Every dive is a mix of history and underwater magic. Plus, these wrecks have put Coron on the map, bringing in scuba divers and adventurers from all over the world while giving a big boost to the local community.

Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just curious about the stories these wrecks hold, scuba diving in Coron is an unforgettable way to explore both history and the beauty of Palawan’s waters.

Which Dive Shop in Coron Should I Choose?

Finding the Right Dive Shop in Coron: Why We Chose Reggae Dive Shop

Before a dive trip, we like to research online and pick a few shops with good reviews, then swing by in person to see the vibe for ourselves.

After visiting several shops, we landed on Reggae Dive Shop—and here’s what made it stand out:

  • Reggae Dive Shop had the best vibes and was the friendliest and most welcoming shop we visited. The staff were approachable and were able to answer all of our questions.
  • Their prices were competitive, and unlike many other shops, they offered a discount for bringing our own gear, which was a nice bonus.
  • Logistics were smooth. They picked us up from our home stay in the morning, saving us the hassle of an early commute. While we had to find our own way back after the dives, the shop’s central location made it easy to grab food and walk back to our accommodations.
  • Small group sizes – 3 divers to 1 dive masters made for safe and comfortable dives.

This post isn’t sponsored, just my genuine opinions! If you’re looking for friendly staff, small group sizes, and fair pricing in Coron, Reggae Dive Shop is definitely worth considering! Check out their good reviews on Google.

The Akitsushima Wreck

The IJN Akitsushima, a massive Japanese seaplane tender, rests on its port side in the waters of Coron Bay, offering an unforgettable dive into history. This 114.8-meter-long warship lies at depths ranging from 22 meters at the starboard hull to 36 meters at its deepest point, making it a dive suited for advanced divers and those certified in wreck diving.

The Akitsushima Wreck

The Ship’s History

The Akitsushima was a critical vessel in the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Pacific fleet. Equipped with 10 anti-aircraft guns and four five-inch guns, it was also designed to carry a massive Kawanishi H8K1 flying boat, which rested on metal tracks near the stern.

  • The Attack: In September 1944, during a U.S. airstrike targeting Japanese vessels in Coron Bay, a bomb struck near the stern of the Akitsushima, causing catastrophic damage. The force of the explosion nearly tore the ship in two, sending it to the seafloor.

The Dive Experience

Depths and Layout:

    • Maximum depth of 36 meters at the port side.
    • Average diving depth is 26–28 meters, offering plenty to explore.

Highlights:

      • A three-barrel anti-aircraft gun, still mounted near the sandy area by the crane’s base.
      • The 35-ton crane, intact and resting on the seafloor, draws schools of giant batfish and barracuda.
      • The stern’s massive damage, where the metal structure is precariously held together, provides a dramatic and humbling view of the wreck’s violent sinking.
      • Giant groupers, barracuda schools, and yellowfin tuna often make appearances around the bow.

  • Crane Machinery: Inside the stern, discover the intricate gears and machinery that once operated the crane used to retrieve seaplanes.
  • Gun Placements: Swivel mounts and larger artillery remnants await discovery, including an artillery shell jammed in its mechanism.

Okikawa Maru

The Okikawa Maru, the largest wreck in Coron Bay, is an impressive dive site. This was my favorite dive of the three.

This Japanese Navy Auxiliary Oil Tanker sank in October 1944, and its massive 180-meter-long structure now rests at depths of 10 to 26 meters, offering a fascinating mix of accessibility and challenges.

Okikawa Maru Shipwreck

The Ship’s History

The Okikawa Maru, often mistaken for the Taiei Maru for decades, was part of the Imperial Japanese Navy Combined Fleet. Reports suggest that it endured multiple bombing runs:

  • First Attack: On August 21, 1944, it survived a bombing raid that sank the Taiei Maru.
  • Final Strike: On October 9, 1944, a second wave of U.S. air attacks sealed its fate, sending the tanker to its final resting place.

Lusong Gunboat

The Lusong Gunboat Wreck is a perfect dive for beginners and snorkelers alike.

The Lusong Gunboat was a Japanese World War II vessel, likely used for patrol and supply purposes during the war, and now rests at depths of 12 to 16 meters, offering a relaxed and scenic underwater experience.

Its stern breaks the surface at low tide, making it one of the most accessible and visible wrecks in Coron Bay.

Lusong Gunboat Shipwreck

The Ship’s History

The Lusong Gunboat, a World War II Japanese supply vessel, played a crucial role as part of Japan’s naval forces during the war.

  • The Attack: On September 24, 1944, the U.S. launched a large-scale air strike on Japanese ships anchored in Coron Bay. The Lusong Gunboat was heavily damaged during this assault. Unable to escape due to its critical condition, the gunboat was ultimately sunk during the same raid, settling at its final resting place near Lusong Island.

Lusong Gunboat Coron

The Dive Experience

Depths and Layout:

  • Max Depth: 12–16 meters, ideal for snorkeling and beginner divers.
  • Parts of the wreck are visible above water at low tide, making it easy to locate and explore.

Highlights:

  • The wreck is beautifully covered in hard corals and teeming with a variety of fish species, providing excellent opportunities for underwater photography.
  • After exploring the wreck, we spent time in a nearby coral garden, which was vibrant and full of marine life.

  1. Kogyo Maru (Cargo Ship)
    • Max Depth: 34 meters (average 24-26 meters)
    • Highlights: Six cargo holds contain bulldozers, cement bags, and a tractor with its original Mitsubishi diesel engine. Great for penetration dives into the engine room and bridge. Marine life includes barracuda, fusiliers, and batfish.

Coron Scuba Diving Conditions:

Scuba diving in Coron offers warm waters and vibrant marine life, but conditions can vary significantly due to the unique nature of the wrecks:

Water Temperature

  • The water is typically warm, ranging from 28°C to 30°C, making it comfortable for divers in light wetsuits or rash guards.

Visibility

  • General Visibility: Visibility ranges from 10 to 20 meters, which is excellent for many recreational dives.
  • Murky Conditions Around Wrecks:
    • These wrecks are genuine World War II remnants and were not emptied before sinking, leaving behind decomposing materials.
    • Decomposition and sediment accumulation can create low visibility in and around the wrecks, especially when currents or divers disturb the silt.
    • Visibility inside the wrecks can be significantly reduced, often requiring specialized training and equipment, such as dive lights, to navigate safely.

Tips for Scuba Diving in These Conditions

  1. Be Prepared for Variability:
    • Visibility can change depending on the time of day, weather, and ocean currents.
  2. Carry Essential Equipment:
    • A strong dive light and a cutting tool are crucial for murky environments.
  3. Focus on Buoyancy Control:
    • Avoid disturbing the silt to maintain better visibility for yourself and others.
  4. Dive with a Reputable Shop:
    • Pick a reputable dive shop that prioritizes safety.
  5. Plan Penetration Dives Carefully:
    • Reduced visibility inside the wrecks requires training in navigation and emergency procedures.

Diving these wrecks is a rewarding experience, but understanding and preparing for the conditions is key to making the most of your adventure while staying safe.

When is the best time to Scuba Dive in Coron?

You can comfortably scuba dive in Coron all year round! That said visibility varies at different times of year:

  • December – March: These are usually the months for best visibility on wrecks.  If you want to be able to clearly see the entire shipwrecks from the outside, you should aim to go around this period.
  • October – June: This is the overall dry period, during which conditions and visibility are more favorable (with December March being the very best months).
  • July – September: This is rainy period – during which visibility is the most reduced and water currents can be stronger, which means some of the deeper wrecks may not be possible to dive.

Coron Wreck Diving Safety and Certifications:

Certification Guide for Wreck Diving in Coron, Palawan

Diving the historic wrecks of Coron is an unparalleled experience, but not all dives are suitable for everyone. Here’s a breakdown of the certifications needed to safely explore these underwater treasures.

Open Water Diver Certification

Advanced Open Water Diver Certification

  • What You Can Dive:
    • Deeper wrecks such as the Irako Maru and Akitsushima (up to 40 metres/130 feet).
    • These dives offer more challenges and richer exploration opportunities.

  • What to Know:
    • This certification focuses on wreck-specific safety protocols, navigation techniques, and emergency preparedness.

Key Considerations

  1. Honest Assessment:
    • Know your limits and only dive sites suited to your certification and experience.
  2. Dive Shop Selection:
    • Some operators may downplay risks or overestimate your abilities—choose reputable dive shops that prioritize safety.
  3. Unique Hazards of Wreck Diving:
    • Fine silt can reduce visibility to zero if disturbed.
    • Sharp edges and confined spaces require excellent buoyancy control and awareness.
  4. Certification Upgrades:
    • If you’re interested in exploring more complex wrecks, consider taking advanced or specialty courses offered by Coron dive shops.

Final Tips

Wreck diving is an exhilarating blend of history, marine life, and adventure, but it demands respect and preparation. With the right certifications and a reputable guide, you can scuba dive Coron’s underwater treasures safely and enjoyably.

Scuba Diving in Coron

Coron’s World War 2 History:

The history of Coron, Palawan, during World War II is marked by a significant naval battle that resulted in the creation of one of the world’s most famous wreck diving destinations.

The World War II Connection

Japanese Occupation

  • During World War II, the Japanese Imperial Navy used the Philippines, including Palawan, as a strategic base in the Pacific.
  • Coron Bay became a harbor for Japanese supply and auxiliary ships transporting goods, fuel, and military supplies.

The U.S. Navy Airstrike (September 24, 1944)

  • The event that put Coron on the historical map occurred on September 24, 1944, when a squadron of U.S. Navy planes from Task Force 38 launched a surprise airstrike.
  • The target was a Japanese supply fleet anchored in Coron Bay and surrounding areas, approximately 220 kilometers from the U.S. fleet.
  • This strike was part of the broader Battle of Leyte Gulf, which aimed to weaken Japanese logistical and naval capabilities in the Philippines.

The Attack

  • Purpose: The U.S. aimed to destroy Japanese supply lines and weaken their hold on the region.
  • Execution: U.S. planes flew a daring mission over mountainous terrain, catching the Japanese fleet off-guard.
  • Outcome:
    • At least 12 Japanese ships were sunk or severely damaged in Coron Bay and the surrounding waters.
    • The ships sank at varying depths, many within the confines of the bay, creating the now-famous wreck diving sites.

The Aftermath

  • The airstrike dealt a critical blow to Japanese supply operations in the region.
  • The ships were left to rest on the seafloor, largely forgotten until they were rediscovered decades later by divers and historians.
  • The wrecks remained mostly intact, preserved by the relatively calm and warm waters of Coron Bay.

Legacy and Modern-Day Significance

Diving Tourism

  • These wrecks are now considered some of the best-preserved World War II shipwrecks in the world, making Coron a mecca for wreck diving enthusiasts.
  • The sunken ships, ranging from oil tankers to seaplane tenders, have become artificial reefs, hosting abundant marine life.

Historical Importance

  • The wrecks offer a tangible connection to World War II history, serving as underwater museums that tell the story of a critical moment in the Pacific theater of the war.

Preservation and Respect

  • While the wrecks are popular diving sites, they are also war graves, as many Japanese sailors perished during the attack.
  • Divers are encouraged to treat the sites with respect, following guidelines to avoid damaging the wrecks or disturbing their history.

The sunken fleet in Coron, Palawan, remains a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the region’s wartime past and its transformation into a peaceful underwater paradise.

How to Get to Siete Pecados?

To visit Siete Pecados Marine Park, you’ll need to first stop by the Siete Pecados Tourist Information Office.

📍Look for the Siete Pecados Tourist Information Office on Google maps for directions to get there.

At this office can pay the entry fee, arrange a boat, kayak, snorkel rentals, and get guidance for your trip.

Please note that while Siete Pecados Marine Park is also marked on Google Maps, the pin is situated in the water, which may lead to inaccurate directions.

Therefore, it’s advisable to use the Tourist Information Office as your starting point. From there, local guides can assist you in reaching the marine park safely and efficiently.

Siete Pecados Coron

Siete Pecados is located down the same road as to reach Maquinit Hot Springs, so if you know how to get to the hot springs, just drive in that direction until you see the sign on the right hand side of the road.

The ride typically takes about 20 to 25 minutes from town over bumpy dirt roads.

You can also hire a tricycle from Coron town.  It’s advisable to negotiate with the driver to wait for you, as finding a return tricycle in the area can be challenging.

The average cost for a round-trip, including a one-hour wait, ranges from PHP 600 to PHP 800. If you require the driver to wait longer, expect to pay an additional PHP 100 per hour.

Kayaking, Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Siete Pecados

Kayaking

Renting a kayak is a fantastic way to explore Siete Pecados!

It only takes about 5-10 minutes to paddle over to the islets, allowing you to get close to the beautiful coral formations and marine life.

To protect these delicate ecosystems, boats must use designated buoys instead of dropping anchors, preserving the pristine underwater landscape. So renting a kayaking allows you to get closer to the islets.

Siete Pecados Marine Park

Snorkeling

In my opinion, Siete Pecados offers the best snorkeling experience in Coron.

The coral is vibrant and well-preserved, creating an ideal environment for both seasoned snorkelers and beginners. The water isn’t too deep, allowing you to see an abundance of marine life right from the surface—no deep dives required!

Scuba Diving:

While you can scuba dive at Siete Pecados, the shallow waters mean you’ll get an amazing view with just a snorkel.

If you’re on a budget or looking to maximize your scuba experience, save it for Coron’s more dramatic dive sites, like the famous wreck dives.

At Siete Pecados, snorkeling gives you more than enough access to the area’s beauty.

What can I see at Siete Pecados?

Vibrant Coral Gardens

The coral reefs at Siete Pecados are a colorful tapestry of diverse coral species, each bringing a unique shape and structure to this underwater landscape:

– Brain Corals: Recognizable by their ridged, maze-like patterns, brain corals add a stony, intricate touch to the reef.
– Staghorn Corals: Delicate and branch-like, these corals are essential to the reef ecosystem, providing shelter for many marine species.
– Table Corals: Flat and sprawling, these corals create natural “tables” that serve as habitat for a variety of marine life.
– Mushroom Corals: These solitary corals, resembling mushrooms, dot the seabed, adding character to the reef floor.
– Tube Corals: Known for their cylindrical, often branching tubes, these corals thrive in shallow waters.
– Fan Corals and Sea Whips: With their delicate, fan-like branches, these corals add a graceful flow, especially in areas with strong currents.

 Colorful Reef Fish

Beneath the surface, Siete Pecados teems with vibrant fish species. Here are some of the most commonly spotted:

– Clown Fish: These playful “Nemo” fish are easy to spot with their orange bodies and white stripes.
– Parrotfish: Known for their beak-like mouths, these colorful fish play an important role in reef health.
– Surgeonfish and Tangs: Distinguished by their bright colors and sharp spines, these fish are a lively addition to the coral scene.
– Butterflyfish: With intricate patterns and slender, flattened bodies, these tropical fish glide gracefully through the water.
– Lionfish: Striking and venomous, lionfish stand out with their bold red, white, and black stripes and long spines.
– Damsels, Angelfish, and Groupers: From the small and feisty damselfish to the large, predatory groupers, the fish variety is endless.

 Other Marine Creatures

Beyond the corals and reef fish, Siete Pecados offers glimpses of other fascinating marine life:

– Sea Turtles: Occasionally spotted gliding through the water, these gentle giants add a touch of magic to any dive.
– Sea Cucumbers and Starfish: Resting on the sandy seabed, these creatures bring unique shapes and textures to the underwater landscape.
– Sea Urchins: Beautiful but spiky, these urchins are best admired from a distance to avoid their sharp spines.

When is the best time to visit Siete Pecados?

The best time to visit Siete Pecados is during the dry season, from November to May, when sea conditions are calm and visibility is at its peak—perfect for snorkeling and diving.

However, the park remains accessible year-round, and visiting during the rainy season offers its own charm, with even fewer tourists and vibrant, lush greenery surrounding the islets.

When we visited Siete Pecados in the mid-afternoon in January, we were pleasantly surprised by how uncrowded it was!

The day before, we’d done the Coron Ultimate Tour and found ourselves surrounded by other tourists at every stop. But here, at Siete Pecados, it felt like we had the place almost to ourselves.

The peaceful atmosphere and freedom to explore at our own pace made it our best snorkeling experience in Coron, especially after the busy crowds we’d experienced the day before.

Should I book a tour to visit Siete Pecados?

Unlike many other tourist spots in the area, most major day tours don’t include Siete Pecados in their itineraries, so it sees far fewer visitors, making it a peaceful escape from the crowds.

Some larger day trips do include a stop here, but if you prefer a more flexible experience, going independently is highly recommended!

When you arrive at the visitor information center, boats and kayaks are available, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

There’s no need for reservations; simply show up, and there’s usually little to no wait time. This way, you can fully enjoy the beauty of Siete Pecados at your leisure.

The Legend of Siete Pecados

The story behind Siete Pecados Marine Park is steeped in local legend, adding a sense of mystery and depth to this natural wonder. While the details may vary slightly depending on who recounts it, the heart of the tale remains consistent.

Once upon a time, in a coastal village, there lived a devoted mother and her seven beautiful daughters, each known for her unique charm and beauty. The sisters were the pride of their community and loved swimming in the sea. Despite their mother’s repeated warnings to stay close to shore, their adventurous spirits often led them into deeper waters.

One day, against their mother’s wishes, the seven sisters slipped away to swim far out into the sea. As they ventured farther, they were caught in a powerful current and, despite their desperate efforts, couldn’t make it back to shore.

Heartbroken, their mother prayed fervently for their safe return, pleading with the sea to spare her daughters. The following morning, the villagers awoke to find seven small islets near the shore, precisely where the sisters had last been seen. The locals believed these islands were the transformed bodies of the seven sisters, a divine response to their mother’s heartfelt prayers.

These islets became known as “Siete Pecados,” meaning “Seven Sins” in English, symbolizing the disobedience that led to their transformation. Over time, the name also came to represent the seven deadly sins, as the jagged formations of each islet were thought to embody the nature of the sins themselves.

Today, Siete Pecados is celebrated not only for its vibrant marine life and coral reefs but also as a place where the legend of the seven sisters lives on.

This blend of folklore and natural beauty creates an unforgettable experience for visitors, making Siete Pecados a site of both wonder and cultural significance.

Siete Pecados & Marine Conservation

Siete Pecados was established to conserve and protect the coastal ecosystems of Coron, particularly from the impacts of overfishing.

Covering 1.8 km2 of coastal ocean, Siete Pecados protects coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows and is home to several threatened and endangered species including hawksbill sea turtles, dugongs, humphead wrasse, and an endangered endemic coral species, Pectinia maxima.

It’s essential for visitors to practice responsible tourism by avoiding contact with corals and marine life and by not littering.

What to Pack for Siete Pecados?

Essentials:

Waterproof bag/backpack
Quick Dry Towel
Water Shoes
Sunscreen

I highly recommend a dry bag because there is a high chance that your belongings could get wet. I’ve linked my favorite one, but there are also tons of places in Coron to purchase dry bags.

The Ultimate Island Tour in Coron, Palawan

Coron is one of the most popular places to visit in the Philippines. With some of the clearest lakes in Asia and blue-green waters with rich corals, diverse sea life and shipwrecks (which are popular dive sites), this slice of heaven in The Philippines is almost certainly on every travelers list.

Travelers flock here to experience unforgettable island-hopping adventures, snorkel in vibrant coral gardens, scuba dive historic world war 2 shipwrecks and marvel at hidden lagoons.

Experience the best Palawan has to offer on the Ultimate Coron Island Tour!

Coron Island Hopping Tour

Where is Coron?

Among the Philippines’ vast array of 7,641 islands, Coron stands out as one of the most popular!

Coron is the third-largest island in the Calamian Islands in northern Palawan in the Philippines. Palawan is a province in The Philippines that comprises of Puerto Princessa (the capital) and other popular towns such as El Nido and Port Barton.

The town of Coron is named after Coron Island, and is also referred to as Coron town proper. Despite its humble origins as a fishing village centered around a small port, Coron town proper has evolved into the primary tourism hub of the island.

Its allure lies in its crystal-clear turquoise lakes, vibrant coral gardens, remnants of sunken World War II ships, pristine white-sand beaches, and iconic limestone cliffs, (the limestone in Coron even has a name: Coron limestone).

It is about 170 nautical miles (310 km) southwest of Manila.

How do the tours in Coron work?

Tours vary between tour companies, but many are very similar in terms of pricing and itineraries. If you are arriving by ferry, there will be people handing out flyers for all the different tour companies as you leave the port. I recommend grabbing these and comparing your options.

You can also walk into town and check out different tour companies offices.

All the tours depart at the same time (around 9:00 am by coast guard regulation) and many follow the same route. This means that popular stops may become crowded.

Group tours usually consist of 10-15 people in one boat.

Kayangan Lake Look out

How much does the Ultimate Coron Island Tour cost?

For our tour, we paid ₽1900 per person ($45CAD or $35USD)

What was included:

  • Lunch
  • Entrance fees/Environmental fees
  • Mask + Snorkel (no fins, pay extra)
  • Kayak at Twin Lagoons
  • Hotel pick up and drop off

The tour price covers all permits and entrance fees for the island hopping destinations, along with a buffet lunch featuring local Filipino dishes. Pickup and drop-off are included if you’re staying in Coron, using a shared van to transport you to and from the boat dock. Snorkel gear, including a mask, is provided, but fins are available for an additional fee.

While kayaks are usually not part of the package, they were included in our case.

We went with Mathias Tours; a decision influenced by our homestay host’s recommendation, coupled with the added benefit of having the kayak at the Twin Lagoon included in the tour price.

Typically, kayak rentals at various stops are not part of the tour package, making it essential to inquire in advance. Some of the locations charge up to ₽1000 ($24CAD or $17USD) for kayak rentals.

Mathias Tours were good, but nothing to rave about. If you can get your kayak included, I would recommend going with them. If not, you’re not missing out booking elsewhere.

It’s a good idea to bring some cash with you. If your kayak isn’t included, you might want to rent one on-site. Some of the stops have spots where you can buy drinks and snacks, or you can even grab something from the floating 7-Elevens!

Where should I book my Coron Island tour?

To book an Island Hopping Tour in Coron, you’ve got a few choices.

You can arrange it through your hostel or hotel reception, visit a shop in town, or just grab a flyer when you hop off your ferry at the pier. Usually, there are folks handing out flyers there with different tour options and contact numbers.

In our case, we booked our tour directly through our homestay host.

Alternatively, you can also book in advance online through GetYourGuide. This is the closest itinerary I could find to our tour:

When do Coron Island Tours Depart?

Tours depart daily.

All tours depart at 9:00 am, as per coast guard regulation.

The Ultimate Island Tour is the longest tour, and goes from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, with lunch included.

The Coron Ultimate Tour is designed to hit all the top spots in one go. You’ll see Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, have lunch on the beach, The Skeleton Wreck (a ww2 shipwreck) and CYC Beach.

Coron Island Hopping Tour Boat

Stop 1: Kayangan Lake

Kayangan Lake stands as one of the crown jewels of Coron, celebrated as one of the most popular sightseeing spots in the region.

Accessible via a short hike (and a steep descent), visitors are rewarded with stunning panoramic views and the opportunity to swim in its pristine waters.

You’ll need to walk 367 steps before arriving at the lake, but only half of them are uphill. At the top of the steps, there is Kayangan Lake Viewpoint, where you can get a picture with Coron Bay in the back.

Then, follow the remainder of the stairs down to the lake.

Once there, travelers are greeted by the breathtaking sight of crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, creating a scene of unparalleled natural beauty.

Kayagan Lake Coron

Kayangan Lake is named the cleanest lake in all of the Philippines (and perhaps all of Asia!), and consists of 70% freshwater and 30% seawater.

Kayangan Lake Rules:

With great beauty, comes great responsibility. There are a few rules that need to be followed when visiting Kayangan Lake:

  • No long fins
  • No freediving
  • Lifejackets are mandatory
  • Food of any kind
  • Coconuts
  • Drones
  • Smoking
  • Speakers or loud sounds

Kayangan Lake Rules

We spent around 40 minutes at Kayangan Lake.

Kayangan Lake View Point

Funnily enough, the renowned viewpoint near Kayangan Lake doesn’t actually offer a view of the lake itself. Instead, it’s situated at the top of the stairs just before descending towards Kayangan Lake, providing a panoramic vista of the area where boats dock.

Despite the absence of a direct view of the lake, the scenery is stunning, offering crystal-clear water clarity that reveals the continuation of the cliffs beneath the surface. During peak hours, queues can form at this viewpoint.

Stop 2: Barracuda Lake

Barracuda Lake is another gem of Palawan. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and lush greenery, the lake’s serene beauty is truly mesmerizing.

The towering limestone formations emerge grandly from the water’s edge, forming a stunning backdrop against the lake’s tranquil waters. Below the surface, the limestone formations extend dramatically into the depths of the lake, shaping a captivating underwater vista.

Barracuda Lake

To reach the lake, you may have to swim from the boat. There is little space for parking along the shore, or the tide may be low. It’s a short, shallow swim. From there, it’s about 10 steps up a wooden ladder and 10 steps down to reach the lake.

What sets Barracuda Lake apart is its fascinating thermocline phenomenon, where layers of warm and cold water meet, creating a distinct temperature gradient as you descend deeper. The surface water is warm and inviting, perfect for swimming, while below the thermocline, the temperature drops significantly, offering a refreshing contrast.

While life jackets are also mandatory at Barracuda lake, they will allow you to take them off in the water and do some free diving here.

While we were there, there was a Filipino guy in the water holding people’s life jackets and taking photos/videos of them with their go-pros or underwater cameras.

We spent around 30 minutes at Barracuda Lake.

Stop 3: Twin Lagoons

Twin Lagoon Coron Palawan

These twin wonders, known for their blue waters and surrounding limestone cliffs, provide a tranquil escape for travelers.

Connected by a narrow opening, the lagoons beckon adventurers to explore their tranquil depths, whether by kayak or by swimming through the cool, crystalline waters.

Twin Lagoon

All of the tour boats arrive and anchor in the lagoon on the west side, and you have the choice of either swimming or kayaking to reach the other half of Twin Lagoon.

Twin Lagoon Coron Palawan

If you choose to swim, you’ll walk down your boat’s ladder into the water and swim your way to the narrow stairway that you’ll see built into the notch between the two steep limestone rock towers.

If the tide is low, you can choose to swim underneath the rock to reach the other side.

If the tide is high or you don’t feel comfortable submerging yourself in the water, take the stairs.

Twin Lagoon Coron Palawan

The other two lagoons are easily swim-able, but it was really nice having a kayak for the Twin Lagoons.

You can still easily swim this lagoon, but it’s much bigger than the first two, and is better explored from a kayak in my opinion.

Twin Lagoons Kayaking

We spent about 30-40 minutes to exploring the Twin Lagoons.

Stop 4: Lunch on the Beach

Coron Island Tour Beach Lunch

After a busy morning exploring lagoons and working up an appetite, it’s time for lunch!

The boat will take you to a beach where it docks. While you were sailing, the boat crew were busy preparing lunch at the back of the boat.

You’ll find a covered table area set up with a long table under a sheltered beach hut.

Stop 5: Snorkeling at the Skeleton Wreck

Skeleton Wreck Coron

The Skeleton Wreck is a 25m long Japanese supply ship that was sunk in an airstrike by US forces during World War II. Most of the boat has weathered away. The steel keel, ribs, and stringers are all that remain; hence the name skeleton wreck.💀

The wreck sits on a slant, and rests at a depth of 5 to 22 meters at the stern. You can only see the shallow end of it.

Skeleton Wreck Coron
Skeleton Wreck Coron

Life jackets were not mandatory at this stop, but I would recommend them if you are not a strong swimmer. This is a popular spot for free diving.

There is also some nice coral and marine life nearby the wreck. This was a very busy spot with a lot of other boats and snorkelers.

Skeleton Wreck Coron

We spent about 20-30 minutes at the Skeleton Wreck.

Stop 6: CYC Beach and Reef

CYC Beach Coron

The last stop of the day was another beach and snorkeling stop. The boat docked nearby a small island beach that you could swim too, or snorkel the reef along the shore.

CYC Beach Coron

We opted to swim around the boat, and took advantage of the floating 711 that came around.

These guys come around in their small boats with coolers full of beer, water, soda and sometimes ice cream, as well as snacks like bags of chips.

Crowds:

Where there is beautiful scenery, corals, and beaches, there are also tourists. Coron is quickly increasing in popularity as a tourist destination in Palawan and the Philippines.

Due to coast guard regulations, no tours can leave earlier than 9:00 am. This results in a lot of tours boats arriving to their destinations at the same time.

Coron Island Hopping Tour

Other Coron Tour Options:

The Ultimate Island Tour can be a busy day. If you want to explore Coron at a slower pace and have more days to spend in the area, you can choose from a variety of other tours.

Tour A and B are the most popular Coron tour options.

Tour A visits Kayangan Lake.

Tour B visits Barracuda Lake and Twin Lagoon, two other immensely popular sites famed for their underwater cliffs and free-diving or snorkeling.

Tour C: Island Escapade is the best option for a relaxed beach day on Coron’s remotest islands.

Tour D: Reefs and Wrecks is the best option for those who want to snorkel over Japanese shipwrecks which sank in Coron Bay during World War II.

Coron Tour Options

Multi-day Island Hopping Trip:

There are also many multi-day island hopping trips to choose from. These tours are the best way to see the hot spots of Coron without the crowds. Since you are already sailing, these boats are not restricted by the 9:00 am departure time, and can arrive to these stops earlier in the morning before the other tours arrive.

Itineraries for this trips vary, but you can start and end in Coron, start in Coron and finish in El Nido, or start in El Nido and finish in Coron.

Big Dream Boat Man tours are a popular option for this adventure.

Private Tour/Boat

If you ask around, you might find it feasible to rent a private boat and guide in Coron for a reasonable rate. You can inquire with hotel staff, check near the pier, or visit tourism offices.

Because of coast guard regulations, departures before 9:00 am aren’t allowed. So, even with a private rental, you won’t reach the popular spots before the crowds. However, you’ll have the freedom to enjoy your time at your own pace and choose your route.

To avoid crowds, consider asking your boat driver to head in the opposite direction of the typical tours.

Private tours often don’t include lunch, so be sure to inquire about that or bring your own.

Loboc River Floating Restaurant & River Cruise, Bohol Philippines

The Loboc River Cruise in Bohol, Philippines, is a tranquil journey through the island’s lush tropical landscape. It’s also one of the most popular tours in Bohol, after the famous Chocolate Hills.

Traditional floating restaurants (traditional bancas/outrigger boats) provide a platform for both scenic appreciation and cultural immersion, as visitors dine on Filipino cuisine while enjoying live performances of indigenous music and dance.

Loboc River Cruise

Our Loboc River Cruise Experience

We happened to be in Loboc in February, and ended up doing a Valentine’s day Cruise. ❤

The start of our Loboc River Cruise adventure was a bit… chaotic.

Boarding:

On arrival for your cruise, you’ll wait inside the visitors complex, and they give you tickets which have a boat number and table number on them.

Then someone led us to the floating restaurant and once onboard, I started looking for our table number, but none of the tables had any numbers on them.

Then I noticed that everyone else was immediately going straight to the buffet after they stepped onboard. There was no orderly line, everyone just kinda pushed in with their plates and started serving themselves.

Confused, I just picked a table with two seats at it and after the crowd calmed down a little we went and served ourselves too. I thought that the lunch would start after we started sailing, but the food was served and everyone was sitting down and eating by the time we set off.

Food:

One of the highlights of the Loboc River Cruise is the buffet lunch served on board. The menu typically features a variety of Filipino dishes, including grilled seafood, local vegetables, meat dishes, and tropical fruits.

The food was actually really good, and there was quite a lot of it to go around. There was more then enough food that you didn’t need to fret and shove in line to get a plate.

While they didn’t run out of food… they did however run out of drinks. Within the first 5 minutes of the cruise we tried to order 2 beers, and they said they were already sold out.

We were the last cruise of the day, so I don’t think they restocked at all throughout the day and there wasn’t any left for our cruise.

Dessert and select drinks are also included in the buffet, but soft drinks and alcoholic beverages need to be purchased separately.

Experience:

The Loboc River Cruise lasts around 1 hour.

As you sail along the river, you’ll be treated to live performances of traditional Filipino music and dance. There is a live performer onboard the boat serenading you as you go along.

Midway through the 1-hour cruise, the raft stops in front of a large hut for a short performance by local performers, often dressed in vibrant costumes, showcase indigenous music, dances like the Tinikling (a popular bamboo dance), and other cultural expressions.

There was a photographer onboard who was taking pictures of everyone, both with their personal phones and her professional camera, with the options to purchase the professional photos at the end of the cruise.

Halfway through your Loboc River cruise, you’ll find yourself near Busay Falls, a set of small falls that flows through the river. This is where the floating restaurant will turn around and head back to the starting point.

The Loboc River Ecotourism Adventure Park is located near the falls, and you might see other tourists enjoying a zipline ride if you look up.

Is The Loboc River Cruise worth it?

It’s a nice relaxing cruise with some pretty views, and the food was quite good.

If you decide to skip this, you aren’t missing out on any amazing life changing experiences. While it was nice to do, it also wasn’t a highlight of the trip. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go on the this cruise.

Loboc River Cruise Hours of Operation

Loboc River Cruise Pricing:

Ticket Cost: ₽850 per person

We we’re staying in the Loboc area, so we went directly to the Loboc Tourism Complex the day before to purchase our tickets. We knew we wanted the last cruise of the day on Valentine’s, so we booked in advance.

You can purchase tickets at the tourism complex on the day,  though you may have to wait 30-60 minutes for the next available cruise.

There are souvenir shops, an air-conditioned waiting area, and clean washrooms at the Tourism Complex.

How to get there:

The river cruise starts from Loay Bridge near the Church of San Pedro.

The Loboc River Cruise is approximately 24km from Tagbilaran City, or 30-45 minute drive, depending on traffic.

From Panglao/Alona Beach, it’s approximately 37km, or an hours drive.

River Cruise Boat

Transport Buses and jeepneys are available at the Tagbilaran City Dao Integrated Bus Terminal. You can also catch a local bus at the Panglao Public Market.

We organized a trike to take us from Panglao to Loboc for  ₽1000, 2 people with 2 pieces of luggage. It took around an hour.

From there, we rented a scooter from our hotel ( ₽400 per day), and drove ourselves to the tourism complex.

Following Google Maps makes it easy to locate The Loboc River Cruise.

Other attractions nearby the Loboc River:

The Famous Chocolate Hills:

The Chocolate Hills are a natural wonder characterized by their distinct cone-shaped hills, which turn chocolate brown during the dry season, hence the name. These geological formations, numbering over a thousand, create a surreal landscape that is a must-see attraction for visitors to Bohol.

Bilar Man Made Forest:

As you make your way to the Chocolate Hills in Carmen, you’ll pass through the enchanting Bilar Man-Made Forest. This lush forest, spanning 2 kilometers along the border of Loboc and Bilar, is a sight to behold.

Comprising tall white and red mahogany trees, this man-made marvel is not only a testament to reforestation efforts but also a refreshing pit stop for travelers. The canopy of trees offers a welcome respite from the heat, creating a cool and breezy atmosphere that’s perfect for a quick photo break.

See the famous Tarsiers:

Bohol is also known for its big-eyed mammals, the Tarsiers. Tarsiers are tiny, adorable primates famous for their big, round eyes and tiny bodies.
They’re among the smallest primates in the world, just a few inches long, with long tails and fuzzy fur.
Visit the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary. Here, you’ll have the chance to see these adorable creatures.

Remember to keep your voice down and refrain from using flash photography to ensure the tarsiers’ comfort and well-being.

Chocolate Hills Adventure Park:

Located next to the Chocolate Hills Complex, the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park (CHAP) is an eco-tourism destination perfect for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. Here, visitors can partake in adrenaline-pumping activities such as the Bike Zip and The Wave Runner, offering biking midair and ziplining on a surfboard, respectively.

Additionally, the park boasts a variety of attractions and facilities to explore, including Rope Courses, rock climbing, Yokuzuna Sumo Wrestling, and ATV rides through the scenic terrain. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, opportunities abound to feed chickens and fish, admire butterflies in the “Ang Paru-Paro” Butterfly Garden, go horseback riding, or trek along the Eco-Hiking Trail.

As you journey through the park, be sure to visit the serpentarium, butterfly garden, and souvenir shops nestled along the way to the park’s peak or observation deck. With its range of activities and scenic beauty, the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park promises an unforgettable adventure for all who visit.

Chase Waterfalls:

Camugao Falls in Bohol, Philippines, offers a serene escape into nature’s embrace. Tucked away in the lush greenery of the island, this hidden gem invites visitors to discover its tranquil beauty.
