About Kayla

I was lucky enough to be born in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Canada! Maybe I am a little biased about that.. but am I wrong though?

I grew up in a small town, and after getting bit by the travel bug at 16, I knew I had to figure out how to make travel my lifestyle.

When I graduated high school, I went on to get a university diploma in Travel & Tourism from Grant MacEwan University.

In this program, I learned the ins and outs of the travel industry: from sales and tickets to managing suppliers and agents and hands-on experience with the actual computerized reservation systems used in the travel industry.

It was a great course and I learned so much about the industry, and even got to travel to China on a Study Tour as part of the diploma!

(If you’re interested in the Travel and Tourism diploma and a career in the travel industry, you can visit their official program page here.)

2011-2016

After receiving my Travel & Tourism diploma, I landed a job at an adventure travel agency in Calgary, AB! I worked there for 5 years, learned a lot about the industry, and had some incredible travel opportunities.

My office was in the University of Calgary, and I had a wide variety of clients. I helped students plan their summer backpacking trips and professors book their fancy holidays. I loved adventure travel, and specialized in booking unique trips. I booked group tours, ocean and river cruises, European trains, you name it.

But the biggest lesson I learned however, was that sitting at a desk was not for me. Even though I was getting incredible experiences and travelling about 6 weeks each year, which is a heck of a lot more than the average North American, it wasn’t enough. I wasn’t happy doing the 9 to 5 grind, and knew I needed to find another way.

I started applying to all the adventurous travel jobs I could. It took months and I interviewed for a bunch of jobs, but they all fell through, until my dream choice came through!

That’s how I found myself working on board cruise ships. I landed a job as Shore Excursions Staff for Royal Caribbeans, working onboard some of the biggest cruise ships in the world! I was getting paid to travel, and it was an incredible experience, and also how I met Ben.

We spent 3 years working for Royal Caribbean and sailing all over the Caribbean.

About Ben

Hi, I’m Ben!

I was born and raised in the UK. After leaving when I was 18, I have been travelling from place to place ever since, making my way to over 40+ countries, and now settling in Canada.

I also went to University and got a degree in Adventure Tourism, but in England!

After University, I moved to Australia on a working holiday visa. I lived here for 2 years, and ended up working on a farm in the outback, fishing in the dessert!

Every couple of years, flood waters create lakes full of fish in the desert, and my job was to fish.

After Australia, I moved to Thailand and became a scuba diving instructor. I spent a few years here on and off, living on Koh Tao Island, teaching scuba diving and travelling around.

Back in October, 2016, we both boarded Royal Caribbean’s ship Anthem of the Seas to start our first contracts as crew members. Joining only 2 weeks apart, it was the first time working on a cruise ship for both of us. Not only were we working on the same ship, but the department!

Kayla was a shore excursions staff, and Ben was a dive instructor/shore excursions, so we started off as co-workers.

Needless to say… not long after that, we went from co-workers, to partners in crime. Ever since we met, we’ve been working and exploring the world together!
